Is This Cartoon Racist?
This cartoon appeared in the New York Post on February 18, 2009, and the controversy continues to grow. Some have argued that the Chimp appears to represent President Barack Obama. If so, then the cartoon is clearly racist. The Post has argued that it represents Congress. So which is it? While I suspect that it is arguable from either perspective, my real concern is that it is not completely unreasonable that one could see the racist element. In fact it is not a stretch at all. Further, for those who say that critics are being too sensitive, dare I say this but, my guess is that the lion's share of the Post's defenders have never faced racism. The irony to this story is that it was released at the same time that the Attorney General talked about Americans as cowards when it comes to race. You much admit, these two incidents side by side certainly say something. Talking about race in this country is never a bad thing. If this cartoon does nothing else, at least it may push the issue a little further out of the closet. And that is a good thing!
