Patrick Mahomes Sr. Sentenced to Jail and Probation for DWI

Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, received a formal sentence on Tuesday for driving while intoxicated, stemming from an incident in February. Mahomes Sr. will serve 10 days in jail, followed by five years of probation with "intense supervision" for the first year. Additionally, he will face a one-year suspension of his driver's license, be required to complete Alcoholics Anonymous courses, and will also have a breathalyzer ignition device installed in his vehicle. If you’re facing DWI charges in Ramsey County or anywhere in the Twin Cities, make sure you consult with an experienced Minnesota DWI Defense Attorney.

“A DWI can happen to anybody, whether you are famous or not.”

The incident occurred on February 24, when Mahomes was pulled over by law enforcement. A breathalyzer indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.23. This is almost three times the legal limit in Minnesota. Mahomes Sr. entered a guilty plea for the DWI charge on August 27, marking his third criminal charge for this offense, with prior offenses recorded in South Dakota in 2008 and in Texas in 2019. In the Minnesota, this would be a Gross Misdemeanor Charge and if convicted, mandatory minimum sentencing would require even more time in jail if this took place here.

Despite the sentencing, Mahomes Sr. expressed hope that he would still be able to attend his son's games this season, albeit with uncertainty about traveling outside of Texas. "It’s kind of a tradition; I normally go to all the football games. I know he enjoys me being there, so hopefully things will work out and I’ll be able to continue what I’ve been doing," he stated in an interview following the sentencing. He also expressed a desire for his experience to serve as a warning to others against drunk driving.

“Remember, if you have priors, these charges may me worse and may come with mandatory jail commits.”

In addition to his current legal challenges, Mahomes Sr. has a notable history as a professional athlete, having played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball for various teams from 1992 to 2003, including being part of the New York Mets team that reached the World Series in 2000.
