Talk to the Police. St. Paul Criminal Defense. - Video
Watch Jack’s Appearance on Court TV
Jack Rice appeared on Court TV to discuss a double homicide case and what happens when a suspect sits down with a police officer. Let’s just say that it doesn’t end well.
Police officers are highly trained in interrogations. This means that you may not even realize that you are being played until after it is over. Along the way, they will lie to you, tell you stories, change their stories, tell you things they have that they don't and even tell you told them things that you never did. They are actually trained to do this.
If you are a suspect in a crime or even if the police just want to talk, you need a criminal defense attorney at your side. The police frequently are playing the long game. They are trying to lock in a story so they can then start picking that story apart. It also locks a suspect into that story when nobody, including the police themselves, do not have the facts. Generally speaking, nothing good comes from that.

Jack Rice Appears on Court TV to Discuss Interrogations and their Use in Prosecutions
Watch Jack’s Appearance on Court TV as he discusses the power of circumstantial evidence.
Defending many criminal cases can be complicated and comes with a lot of moving parts. Try defending a murder charge? As a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist, Jack has absolutely done that. He was called in as a Guest on Court TV to discuss multiple cases including the murder trial of Andy McCauley who was charged with murdering his girlfriend’s 15 year old daughter.
Jack discusses interrogations and how police officers use their skills to lock down a suspect’s story before they shift the ground underneath them. Officers will then add and subtract facts, make false claims and more to push and pull that suspect this way and that. Jack will talk about how this works. We will then turn to circumstantial evidence, what it means, how it drives a jury and whether it is enough.
In addition, the investigation of the death of Gabby Petito continues. There is still a manhunt for Brian Laundrie. Jack will discuss how warrants apply in this case and the release of additional evidence by the FBI.

Are Cameras in the Courtroom a Good Idea? Jack Appears on WCCO to Discuss.
If somebody is charged with a crime, shouldn’t the public be allowed to watch the proceedings? Well, the 6th Amendment of the Constitution says yes. So, does the Supreme Court. In the past, that has meant, people and the written press. However, in some places, it hasn’t meant TV cameras. Chauvin may have changed that here. However, is it a good idea?
A Minnesota Judge rejected media requests to televise hearings in the Daunte Wright case involving former officer Kim Potter. As of now, her lawyers rejected the request and that was enough to stop it. Well, that could change.
I appear on WCCO with Adam Carter to discuss the court system, transparency and the protection of the Constitutional rights of accused people in criminal court. It is an interesting balance.

The Feds are Charging Chauvin. Now what? Jack Appears on AM 950 to Discuss
Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in a Minnesota State courtroom. Now, the Feds have stepped in and charged Derek Chauvin along with several of the other officers with federal criminal charges including excessive force and violating the civil rights of George Floyd. Chauvin also faces separate federal charges for a 2017 incident involving a similar restraint against a 14 year old boy.
While it has pretty rare for the Feds to come in in cases like these, it does happen. It happened in the Rodney King case back in 1991. It happened in Charlottesville, VA where a bunch of white supremacists were gathering and a woman was killed a couple of years ago. It has happened in other places. To be successful at trial, the Feds must prove that Chauvin acted willfully to deprive Floyd of his civil rights and that the use of force was Constitutionally unreasonable.
Jack will appear on Matt McNeil on AM 950 to discuss this, the aftermath of the Chauvin trial, and what is to come in the next trials. Should be fun.
