Participating in Legal Panel Discussion About Rule of Law and Society is Always Interesting

There is a struggle that sometimes takes place in society about the rightful role of the legal profession and what they are doing or, more accurately, are trying to do. From my perspective, lawyers often do a very poor job in explaining why they do what they do and how law truly binds society together rather than tearing it apart. The term that I use is called “Rule of Law.” It is about having a legal system that works but also one in which citizens, any citizens, all citizens, believe that it works.

There was a play called Witness for the Prosecution by Agatha Christie. While it is more than 70 years old, it is still relevant in society as it addresses a lot of questions including the role of lawyers in the legal system and whether we are doing good by our clients and for society as a whole. We watched the play first and then took the stage to discuss it and society.

I served on the panel with a Ramsey County Judge and a senior prosecutor. Both were friends and both a fine lawyers whom I consider friends of mine as well. Lots of fun and a real privilege.
