Is it Possible to Resolve All of My Criminal Cases in Minnesota at the Same Time?

It’s called a Global Resolution. The idea behind it is that if somebody is facing multiple criminal charges, either in one jurisdiction or in multiple jurisdictions, the goal is to try and fold all of those cases into a sentence that would essentially apply to all of them. This frequently happens in drug charges, theft or property crimes but can happen with any other criminal charges as well. The benefit is that you avoid the potential for “death by a thousand cuts”, to limit exposure, and to use the weight of the collective agreement to drive settlement on all individual charges. As a result, the potential may be the ability to either get certain charges dismissed or amended or to eliminate or limit jail or prison time and other ramifications. If you are facing multiple charges in one jurisdiction such as Ramsey County, Hennepin County, Washington County or Dakota County, or multiple charges in multiple jurisdictions like those above, you absolutely need to sit down with an experienced criminal defense attorney.

“When facing multiple charges or charges in multiple jurisdictions, you face the risk of each prosecutor wanting a bite out of you. Worse, you add up all of these bites and the outcome could be nothing short of catastrophic.”

Criminal Defense Attorney Jack Rice appears on WCCO on 5/17/22 to discuss the plea of Thomas Lane, one of the four officers involved in there George Floyd case. Lane plead to amended state charges in the shadow of the Federal conviction. There was a very specific strategic reason for this plea and it is something akin to a global settlement. In the end, Lane won’t feel that sentence at all as it will ruin alongside the other sentence. This is an example where there was no up side to a trial and no pain to fixing the State case.

“Knowing how to fold cases within cases and to fix everything at once can be monumental.”

If you are facing multiple criminal charges and are facing serious time, sit down with an experienced criminal defense attorney in Minnesota. These kinds of resolutions are possible but it takes time, effort and expertise.
